Why are Guidance Counselors and Financial Aid Officers Not Enough?

American College Funding provides the help your guidance counselors and Financial Aid Officers (FAOs) can’t possibly provide. We work for you and your family. Financial aid officers work for the schools. Their job is to get as much money for their school as possible. Colleges and universities are businesses. Sitting down with a financial aid officer to complete your FAFSA or CSS Profile is much like going to the local IRS office to complete your income tax returns. They will help you complete the forms, but the chances of you getting the best aid package possible are slim to none.

In addition to dealing with all the drama of dealing with hundreds of high school kids and their behavioral and learning challenges, the overworked high school guidance counselors assist with obtaining general information about schools and other minor details such as filing deadlines or board exam testing dates.

They are not the appropriate people to assist with matters pertaining to financial aid, especially when it comes to FAFSA/CSS Profile filings. The typical guidance counselor will have no idea how each line on the  various forms affects how much you’re expected to pay in college costs. In addition, they are not licensed financial professionals who understand how to help you reposition your assets to receive the most favorable treatment.. Above all, the guidance counselor will not be available during the college years.

Why Your Financial Advisor May be Hazardous to Your Wealth

Unless your advisor intimately understands the FAFSA and CSS Profile forms, they will not be able to be very effective. In fact, you will be very lucky if the are not damaging to your overall goals. The same applies to the typical CPA or tax professional.

College Planning is a very special discipline that dictates very specific treatment and positioning of your assets and income. The typical financial advisor or CPA can’t possibly put you in the proper positions without the right experienced and expertise. Tax codes are much different than financial aid guidelines, and the result of very good tax planning is often damaging in financial aid planning.

We use very sophisticated software that has been designed specifically to pull the very best results from each individual’s personal situation, and all cases are prepared and reviewed by people who have been specifically trained in this area. It is in your best interest to make sure any financial professional has a clear understanding of each line of the FAFSA or CSS Profile before taking any of their college planning advice.

Why ACF?
